Those that deny Jesus is God will often refer to passages such as Hebrews 1:5-6 and Hebrews 5.5 in relation to Jesus being begotten. They assume the word begotten here means created. But if a person was to consider the passages being quoted, they would realise that these scriptures are talking about Jesus being crowned the Messianic King. The anointed King from the line of David. These scriptures are about Coronation. The coronation is the day when Jesus begins ruling as the son of David as an heir of David.
Psalm 2:6-12 KJV Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. [10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. [11] Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. [12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
When God says to the King, "Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee", what day is God referring to in the context? Its there in verse 6. The coronation.
1 Chronicles 17:11-14 KJV And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. [12] He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. [13] I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: [14] But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.
1 Chronicles 22:7-10 KJV And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God: [8] But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. [9] Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. [10] He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.
King David and King Solomon already existed before they were begotten. Being begotten in the context has nothing to do with being created. In 1 Corinthians 4:15 Paul says "For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel." This does not mean that Paul brought people into existence from a place of non-existence. It shows that Paul was a father to them in some sense, not that Paul literally created them.
1 Chronicles 28:4-6 KJV Howbeit the Lord God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel: [5] And of all my sons, (for the Lord hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. [6] And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
2 Samuel 7:13-15 KJV He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. [14] I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: [15] But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
A son represents his father. The King of Israel was to represent God, reflect God and carry out the righteous will of God on earth in rulership, because of this the King became God's son in that sense. This can be demonstrated by the fact that those that are against God are said to have the devil as their father, or that they are children of the devil. They represent the devil, not God. It does mean the devil brought them into existence from a place of non-existence.
John 8:44 KJV Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
1 John 3:10 KJV In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. Yet there is another sense where we are all children of God since he is the Creator of us all. The Bible demonstrates that there are different types of sonship. Angels are also called sons of God, and if begotten always means brought into existence from non-existence then the rhetorical question in Hebrew 1.5 makes no sense since it could be applied to every angel. It would also make Paul the creator of Christians.
Acts 17:28-29 KJV For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. [29] Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
Job 1:6 KJV Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.
Hebrews 1:5-6 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? [6] And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
Hebrews 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
When Jesus is said to be begotten it is relation to his coronation as demonstrated by the scriptures. None of those scriptures are talking about a King being brought into existence. It has nothing to do with creation.
Acts 13.33 KJV God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
1 John 3:8 KJV He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Luke 1:31-32,35 KJV And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. [32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: [35] And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Micah 5:2 KJV But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Isaiah 9:6 KJV For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Romans 1:4 KJV And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Hebrews 5:5 KJV So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
Psalm 89:27 KJV Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
